‘My mother-in-law stole my pregnancy test to keep as a memento – it’s so creepy’

As parents, it’s not unusual to keep mementos and keepsakes of your child’s early years, such as the milk teeth they lose as they get older or a lock of their hair from the first time they get a trim.

Some parents will even choose to keep the used pregnancy test they took that told them they were pregnant, as it’s often the first sign many couples have that marks the start of their life as a family.

But one mum-to-be has been unable to keep hold of her positive pregnancy test – because her husband fished it out of the bathroom bin and gifted it to his own mother.

The pregnant woman took to Reddit to explain the situation, as she said her mother-in-law was desperate for a memento of her future grandchild and wanted to keep the pregnancy test, even though it left the woman “creeped out”.

In her post, she said: “I found out I was pregnant very recently, and my husband and his family are beyond happy and excited. My husband was married two times before me but couldn’t have kids for 10 years. This is obviously a huge deal for his family because his mum will be a first-time grandma with this baby.

“They threw a celebration dinner for us and as his mom and I were talking about the baby, she told me about how she already started ‘making memories’ by having ‘keepsakes’ of her grandbaby. I felt a bit confused and asked if my husband bought something for the baby and gave it to her.

“She said no, but he did bring her my used pregnancy test and gave it to her to store as a ‘memory’ of the news of her grandbaby’s existence. I was floored. I looked at my husband like ‘did you really do that?’ and he nodded while smiling.

“Not going to lie, I felt creeped out, disgusted and very uncomfortable.”

The mum-to-be then told her husband that by giving away the used pregnancy test he had made her feel “violated” since the test had her urine on it.

She was then accused of “overreacting” over the situation and was told that she had “ruined the joy” of the pregnancy announcement for her husband’s family.

She added: “After the initial shock I just went off on both of them calling what they did creepy and disgusting and highly violating. My husband argued that it was not a huge deal, he just grabbed the test once I got rid of it, put it in a plastic bag and ‘gifted’ it to his mum as a ‘keepsake’.

“I told him it made me feel violated and creeped out because that test had my literal pee on it. His mum then said something about ‘taking care’ of the smell and I lashed out even more and demanded they get rid of it, but they kept arguing calling me controlling.

“My brother-in-law asked me to calm down but I decided to just grab my stuff and go home.

“My husband started arguing about how this is all just an overreaction and said that I ruined his and his family’s joy with how I behaved after finding out about the pregnancy test. He said for him and his mum it’s all about the baby, but I somehow made this whole thing about me and hurt their feelings in the process.”

Commenters on the Reddit post were equally baffled by the mother-in-law’s decision to take the used pregnancy test, with many saying the woman’s husband completely ignored her feelings.

One person wrote: “To do that without your go-ahead is bizarre, to double down and blame you for being upset is concerning. Decent people would get rid of it and apologise for making you feel that way, not try to make you feel worse.”

While another said: “Those results on that test will fade over time, so not even worth saving. That’s weird and sort of gross that your husband saved the test, and weirder still he gave it to his mum.”

And a third added: “It’s one thing your husband keeping it without telling you. But to give it secretly to his mother? I agree that it’s creepy and violating, and I don’t think you overreacted at all.”
